Campaign in support of Medically Supervised Injecting Rooms in the Inner West

Supervised injecting rooms are proven to save lives by managing overdoses. Injecting facilities also improve the overall well-being of people who inject drugs by reducing the risk of Hepatitis C and HIV and by linking users to a variety of health and social services, from dental and mental health services to legal and housing support. They also provide a gateway to rehabilitation programs. Continue reading

Community Ride for Safer Cycling in Maribyrnong

Around 100 people participated in a community bike ride initiated by Victorian Socialists West and BikeWest. The ride was also supported by the local Greens and Extinction Rebellion Westside. It was chaired by Andrew Charles, who was the Victorian Socialists candidate for Stony Creek. Cllr Jorge Jorquera spoke at the rally, alongside representatives from the supporting organisations. Football (soccer) has a very proud cultural association with migrant histories in this country; an often critical part of supporting migrant communities and combating racism. I was honoured to be part of a conversation that established the Maribyrnong Football (Soccer) Alliance, bringing together Maribyrnong's Football Clubs and establishing a united vision (see below). When Footscray Primary decided to discontinue it’s Vietnamese Bilingual Program it was a great loss not only for the Vietnamese community but also for everyone who is committed to defending cultural diversity in the Inner West in the face of gentrification. In response, VietSpeak was established, which is a vibrant community campaign involving Vietnamese speakers, educators. We are committed to restoring a bilingual program in the Inner West and we are also exploring the possibility of establishing an early childhood Vietnamese bilingual program. Continue reading

Homes Not Prisons

Say no to the expansion of Dame Phyllis Frost in Melbourne’s West Victorian Socialists Wests supports the Homes Not Prisons campaign led by Flat Out Inc. The campaign aims to build opposition to the expansion of the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, a maximum-security prison for women in Ravenhall in Melbourne’s west. The proposed 106 new cells will cost $188.9 million. This money should instead be dedicated to building more public housing and making it accessible or criminalised and highly disadvantaged women and families. January 26 is Invasion Day

Recognising the invasion of this country and the dispossession of our First Nations peoples is critical if we are to fight the racism and injustice that still prevails. The annual massive Aboriginal-led protests on Invasion Day, which also give a platform to the struggle against Black Deaths in Custody and other forms of structural oppression, have shown the widespread community solidarity with First Nations people in their fight for justice.  Continue reading
