TAX THE RICH TO FUND HEALTH, EDUCATION AND SERVICES
The richest 200 people in Australia increased their wealth by $49 billion last year. The corporate tax rate has been cut from 49% in the 1980s to 30% today. A third of major corporations pay no tax! There should be a wealth tax for the super rich, an increase in company tax to 50% and a crackdown on tax evasion by multinationals. We can use the proceeds to fund public education and health, and make uni and TAFE free.
INCREASE WAGES, RESTORE WORKERS’ RIGHTS
Real wages are in decline. Legislate for an immediate increase to minimum wages – a rise from $18.93 to $25 would be a good start – and for an increase in all award wages. Restore penalty rates and reverse all anti-union laws, including restrictions on the right to strike. We need secure jobs that we can rely on for a living.
Privatisation has been a disaster, resulting in fat profits and high prices. Put transport, energy and the banks in public hands, and extend public housing to reduce housing costs. For-profit childcare and aged-care are too expensive and low quality. We need free public preschool and aged-care systems.
PUT POLITICIANS ON A WORKER’S WAGE
Politicians are out of touch with ordinary people. No wonder, when their salaries start at $207,100 a year.
Politicians should be on a worker’s wage. Kath Larkin, along with all Victorian Socialists candidates, has pledged to only take $87,000 a year, the wage of an average public servant (a nurse or a teacher), and to put the rest into community campaigns for better services.
STAND AGAINST RACISM
Instead of fixing the problems facing ordinary people, politicians and the media run scare campaigns about migrants, Muslims and refugees. The horrific racist massacre in Christchurch shows where this racism leads. Victorian Socialists campaign against all forms of racism, including Islamophobia. We’re for welcoming refugees instead of locking them up. We support the struggles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. And our activists have always been in the front line of campaigns against fascists and the far right.
ACT NOW ON CLIMATE EMERGENCY
Climate change is already affecting the most vulnerable in our society. Put the power industry in public hands to achieve 100% renewables within 10 years. Stop the Adani mine. No new coal mines. Phase out all coal and gas. Guarantee secure jobs for workers from the fossil fuel industry in the renewable energy sector.
It’s a disgrace that on average women earn only 84% of the male wage. Victorian Socialists support struggles like the Big Steps campaign by early childhood educators to get wage justice and close the gender pay gap. We want a public childcare system, taking the burden off women and families.
REAL ACTION ON JOBS
With 15 people who want work for every job vacancy, the government should focus on job creation and publicly funded training, raise welfare payments above the poverty line, not punish welfare recipients with “robo debt” and other similar schemes.
