Climate change disaster: We need to transition to 100% renewables

It is time for action that targets the corporate interests that are preventing urgent action to address climate change.

Victorian Socialists believe that it will be quicker to transition to 100% renewable energy by bringing the energy industry back into public hands to make the transition without private profit interests getting in the road.

With record-breaking severe heat and bushfires sweeping the northern hemisphere, large parts of the world are heading towards becoming unliveable because they will be so hot.

It's unheard of to have fires of such scale and frequency in the Arctic circle. Japan's deadly heatwave has again broken temperarture records.

Climate change is a justice issue because rich people can afford heating and cooling but the rest of us on low incomes will struggle.

It's already the case that heatwaves kill more people than other extreme weather events such as cyclones or bushfires.

In 2009, the disastrous Black Saturday bushfires tragically killed 173 people, but during the heatwave around that event, 374 people in Victoria died as a result of extreme heat.

We need to maintain the ban on unconventional gas in Victoria. Gas is not a transition fuel. It pollutes water tables and prime agricultural land.

We need to penalise companies for the huge wastage of resources from making products that are designed to only last a short while so that people are forced to throw them away and buy new replacement products.
