Hi, I’m April. I’m standing for election because I believe we need a voice that will fight for working-class people in a society run by the rich and powerful.
As a former school teacher, I’ve seen the immense stress schools and staff experience due to chronic underfunding. But because neither major party will commit to properly funding our public schools, we live in a state where your income determines the quality of education you and family will get.
And it’s not just education—our hospitals, childcare and nursing homes are falling apart because they’re underfunded public services or run as corner-cutting, cheapskate private businesses.
I’m sick of seeing parliament ignoring these problems, or at best producing toothless ‘reforms’ that barely make a dent in them. Meanwhile housing costs continue to soar, the rich keep getting richer and we careen towards an irreversible climate catastrophe.
We need to freeze rents; properly fund healthcare, education and childcare; shut down fossil fuel companies and fully transition to renewables. We cannot rely on major party politicians to get a better world—we have to fight for it, both inside and outside of parliament.
I’ve been active in community campaigns for justice in Palestine, and against racism and fascism. I’ve joined protests against weapons manufacturers and cuts to healthcare, and stood on picket lines with workers striking for better conditions.
If elected, I’ll use my platform to fight for the future we deserve, and I’ll help build the forces in our workplaces and communities that do have the power to win our demands—a mass, organised socialist movement. Join us if you want to be part of it.
