Our community is living proof that if we stand together we can win a better world.
Hi, I’m Chris. I’m running as a candidate for Victorian Socialists in Richmond.
Our community is living proof that if we stand together we can win a better world. I first moved to the area in 2006, and started my teaching career at a local public high school. I became involved in successful campaigns to stop the ‘managed decline’ and sell off of public housing.
I was one of the main organisers of the 2013-2014 campaign to stop the East-West Link. We foiled the Liberals’ plans to destroy this area with a giant polluting toll road, and forced Labor to change their position on the project and prioritise public transport.
As a young teacher I worked nights for over a decade in a local bookshop. From 2017-2020 I helped to unionise the company for the first time since its founding in 1969.
I have also been heavily involved in organising against the rise of the far right. Neo-Nazis have repeatedly tried to enter the political mainstream over the past decade, through rallies in Richmond and elsewhere. In 2016 they even attacked our socialist election campaign event in Collingwood, only to be fought off by striking workers from the Abbotsford brewery!
Most recently, I have been heavily involved in organising the protests, public meetings and community pickets against the cuts to cohealth. It is the mobilisation of ordinary residents that has postponed this disastrous plan by the private cohealth board.
Despite these wins, public housing and health services are still under threat, environmental risks are soaring, cost of living pressures for low-wage workers worsen, and the far right continues to mobilise.
If elected in November, I’ll use the position not only as a megaphone to amplify, but a tool to actually win the needs and demands of workers and residents in Richmond.
