I’m Gene, the Victorian Socialists candidate for Mornington. I'm running with the Socialists because politics is a game rigged for the super-rich. We need a political shift that puts working-class people first.
I moved here to help care for an elderly family member. Since then I’ve seen the beauty of this region. But I’ve also seen the deep wealth divide: seemingly always-empty mansions along the Esplanade in stark contrast to the eastern side of the Nepean Highway.
Here in Mornington the cost of living crisis, exorbitant house and rental prices, and an increasingly failing social safety net are all resulting in people from across the generational divide doing it tougher. Looking at the big picture, we’re facing a world ravaged by war, genocide, environmental catastrophe, AI doomsday predictions and a global economic situation that seems to only be getting worse.
I’ve been involved in community organising for more than a decade, and over that time the need for fundamental social change has only become more obvious. If elected I’ll fight for the working-class people in communities spread through our electorate, often in the far less photographed places, not the absentee owners of sea-view mansions.
I’ll fight for policies that would genuinely reduce cost-of-living pressures on ordinary people:
- For free and more regular public transport options
- To scrap the $17 toll for those commuting to Melbourne daily
- For more funding for safer, publicly-owned child care
- For more accessible healthcare in our regions, including a push for desperately needed local specialist options
- For an aged care system that can provide dignity, respect and care for residents no matter what postcode you’re in
- And to tax corporations and billionaires to fund it all
Politics in Australia is changing rapidly, and we have a responsibility to people who will have to live with the consequences of today’s decisions. I’m running with Victorian Socialists because we think a better world is possible if we build a movement that demands people are put before profit.
