Like a lot of people in the northern suburbs, I’m sick of seeing our community taken for granted by the major parties. We are struggling to keep up with the cost of groceries, rent, and mortgages, while the state government neglects the services we rely on.
Working every day in a public school, I see first hand the breaking point our education sector has reached. Thanks to the policies of the state Labor government, Victorian public schools are now the most underfunded in Australia.
While working-class people are told to tighten our belts, corporate profits are soaring. We can see these skewed priorities playing out in our backyard with the proposed AI data centre in South Morang. Tech giants and developers are being handed our local land and resources to extract private profit, putting big business ahead of the affordable housing, green spaces, and infrastructure our community desperately needs.
Right now, parties like One Nation are trying to capitalise on the justified anger people feel about this inequality. But instead of taking on the corporate giants who are actually profiting off our struggles, they try to divide us by pointing the finger at migrants and minorities.
The fact that One Nation is bankrolled by the same anti-worker billionaires who want to keep our wages down tells you everything you need to know about whose side they are really on.
The solution is not racism, it is working-class people standing together. I am a socialist because I know that when we unite, we have the power. We generate all the wealth in society, and we shouldn't have to settle for crumbs while the rich get richer.
Real change is only ever won through this collective action. As a striking member of the Australian Education Union, and through my work with the Socialists in Schools campaign, I’ve fought alongside my fellow educators for the fully funded public services we deserve.
