Maeve Riches

Candidate for Eltham

Everyone should have the chance to live a decent life, and in a wealthy country like Australia that's not a far flung dream, it’s a future worth fighting for.

Hi I’m Maeve. I’m running in the upcoming state election as a candidate with Victorian Socialists in Eltham because we need a society that puts people before profit.

I’m a renter, a hospo worker and member of the United Workers Union, and a student. I know the cost of living is hitting working people hard. Meanwhile the billionaires and super rich in this country continue to increase their wealth.

Public services are being neglected, housing is inadequate and unaffordable, and things are only getting worse. Meanwhile billions are being funneled into fossil fuel subsidies, and even more into AUKUS and militarism. I’m running in this election because I want to help turn this situation around.

Politicians at all levels of government are in the pockets of the rich, and have grown increasingly out of touch with the people they’re supposed to represent. Everyone should have the chance to live a decent life, and in a wealthy country like Australia that's not a far flung dream, it’s a future worth fighting for.

I’ve been a socialist for several years. I got involved in community activism during the climate movement, and have since been involved in a number of campaigns for LGBTQIA+ rights, for refugees, and against the far right.

In the past few years, I’ve campaigned in solidarity with the people of Palestine, against Israel’s war in Gaza, and against the complicity of the Australian government and universities.

If elected in November, I’ll fight for our community and for the better world we need and deserve.
