Nalinda Amarasiri Gunawardana
Candidate for Berwick
I believe a better society is possible and I want to be a part of building it.
Hi, I’m Nalinda. I’m running in this year’s state election as a candidate with Victorian Socialists because I believe a better society is possible and I want to be a part of building it.
I’m a Clyde North local and have lived in the area for four years. Before that I lived in Beaconsfield.
I’m a civil engineer by profession and a member of Engineers Australia. I’m also an active member of Amnesty International and a member of psychoanalytic organisation the Lacan Circle of Australia and a student member of the Australian Counsellors Association.
I’m passionate about human rights and have worked as a coordinator of Amnesty International’s Western Australian branch. I’m also passionate about human psychology and addressing the mental health crisis we are facing today.
I stand for:
- Upholding unity in a multicultural and multi-faith Australian community
- Free healthcare for everyone
- Enhancing quality of public schools
- Protecting dignity and human rights
- Secure housing for all
Politicians at all levels of government are in the pockets of the rich, and have grown increasingly out of touch with the people they’re supposed to represent.
In a wealthy society like Australia, everyone should have the chance to live a decent life. Today, the people at the top are seeing their wealth grow rapidly, while many at the bottom are being left behind.
I’ve been a community organiser and activist for more than 25 years since, including 12 years in Australia. I’ve been involved in campaigns against racism and for action on climate change. In recent times, I’ve campaigned in solidarity with the people of Palestine and against Israel’s war in Gaza.
If elected in November, I’ll fight for you.
