Oppose militarism and war

Australia faces no threat to its sovereignty. Despite this, successive federal governments have involved Australia in alliances with the United States and other imperialist countries to bolster Australia’s military and economic power beyond our own borders, to the benefit of multinational and Australian corporations. Victorian Socialists oppose imperialism and neo-colonialism, and extend our solidarity to nations and peoples who suffer and resist oppression.

What we think

  1. Socialists oppose Australian involvement in great power rivalries or imperialist conflicts.
  2. Australia should withdraw from all alliances with major imperialist powers, including the AUKUS deal, and instead pursue a policy of non-alignment.
  3. Victorian Socialists oppose Australian support for Israel on the grounds that it is a genocidal apartheid state; we stand in solidarity with the Palestinians in their ongoing struggle for peace, justice and liberation.
  4. Nuclear weapons and nuclear energy programs have no place in a peaceful society.

We’ll fight to

  1. Cease the Victorian government's partnership with Elbit Systems and tear up its memorandum of understanding with the Israeli Ministry of Defense.
  2. End Victorian government support for the biennial arms fair at Avalon Airport.
  3. Ban nuclear-armed and nuclear-powered vessels from Victorian ports.
  4. End Victorian government relations with and divest from all companies involved in the development or sale of nuclear weapons, technology or components.
  5. Oppose any Victorian government procurement from companies complicit in the occupation of Palestine and support a full arms embargo on Israel.
  6. Ban Israeli-flagged ships from Victorian ports.
  7. Enforce arrest warrants issued by international bodies against any Israeli officials who visit Victoria.
  8. Advocate for Australian withdrawal from the AUKUS agreement and demand the federal government abandon the nuclear-powered submarine program, redirecting the funds to housing, healthcare and climate transition.
